During the Chien-yen reign (1127-1130) he served in office along the Eastern Che circuit (eastern Chekiang). He was a skilled painter of landscapes in the blue and green style, and he is also known for his paintings of rocks and trees, birds and animals and flowers, and figures. Chao Po-chü often worked on a small scale, and it is primarily for these works that he is known today. The blue and green style of landscape painting of the T'ang dynasty (618-906) painters Li Ssu-hsün and Li Chao-tao was not practiced during the Five Dynasties (906-960) and Northern Sung (960-1127). Chao Po—chü and his brother Chao Po-su were fundamental in reestablishing its popularity. This painting depicts palaces and towers in the mountains of immortals. Colors are richly applied but in such a manner as to preserve the clarity of the scene. The white clouds emanating from the depths of the mountain are particularly elegant. This painting was presented to the museum by Huang Chün-pi.
