Wearing a light yellow robe with a round collar and wide sleeves, a jade-decorated red belt girdles his abdomen and a pair of black decorated shoes adorns his feet. His hat is a stiffened horizontal black-gauze “wing” official's cap adapted from the rounded soft-wing version. This work bears no signature or seal of the artist, the only inscription being three characters for “Sung T'ai-tsu” appearing on a label attached to a blank area of the chair armrest. Records concerning painting indicate that such artists as Wang Ai, Mou Ku, and the monk Tao-hui all once did portraits of Emperor T'ai-tsu. Unfortunately, they do not survive for comparison and cannot be used to determine whether this portrait is related to any of these three artists. The National Palace Museum actually has four portraits of Emperor T'ai-tsu in its collection. Apart from this large full-length hanging scroll, the others are all half-length portraits.(20061206)
