Receiving the kung-shen civil service degree, Wen retired after the fall of the Ming in 1644. He followed but adapted the family style of painting and calligraphy, modeling his landscape paintings after those of Ni Tsan and Wang Meng. Depicting a lotus pond on a clear summer day, two blossoms have fully opened as a kingfisher perches on one of the stems. This work seems to be more in the “boneless” wash method than the “out-line” brushstroke one. The light and refined coloring reveals the delicate nature of the plants. Brushwork is smooth and graceful for an elegant effect. Thus, the title inscribed in the upper right is thus entirely appropriate for this work.
