A student of Wang Chien and Wang Shih-min, he was taken to view and copy the works of ancient masters in many great collections. In this way he was able to absorb the brush techniques of both past and present masters. Wang Hui was able to unite the best quality of the Northern and Southern schools of painting. Because of his consummate skill, he became the greatest master of brush technique in the Ch’ing Dynasty.This work was done in 1699, when Wang Hui was in his sixty-eighth years. It depicts the country house of Hsü Yung-hsüan, for whom it was painted. Hsü was a very wealthy official who assisted the famous poet Chu I-tsun in painting the latter’s collected works. This painting reflects great skill in the handling of the brush and in the use of blue and green color, but the artist was perhaps too self-conscious and the result somewhat stiff. The picture has inscriptions by the eminent scholar-officials Wang Shih-chen and Sung Lao, indicative of the high company kept by Hsü Yung-hs üu.3an.
