His style names were Ts’ung-chi and T’ing-cheng, sobriquet Tu-ch’ih. He was the grandson of Duke K’ai-kuo Chung-min, Sun Hsing-tsu (1336-1370). He entered the court during the Hsüan-te reign (1426-1435) and magistrate later became the Prefect of Hsin-an Prefecture. By nature perceptive and smart, it is said that Sun bore the air of an immortal. He excelled in painting birds, animals, flowers, and landscapes. His bird-and-flower and grass-and-insect paintings are completely shaded with color washes, making use of the boneless method of Hsü Ch’ung-ssu and Chao Ch’ang, but he established a style of his own. This painting in a boneless style depicts two dragonflies on grass. The relaxed brushwork gives the appearance of carelessness, but conveys the mood of the liveliness of a fine summer day.
