Going by the style name Biyu and the sobriquet Xuezhai, she excelled at playing the drum zither and was gifted at poetry, calligraphy, and painting as well.This work, selected from “Album of Collected Paintings Through the Ages,” is done in heavy colors on silk. It employs an intimate one-corner composition to depict a morning glory plant entwined around bamboo. Since antiquity, blue and green pigments have traditionally been used for landscapes, but this work stands out for its use in flower painting. Applications of white pigment and mineral blue simulate the minute gradations of color in the morning glory from blue to purple. Bright mineral green was also used for the morning glory leaves, which contrast with the dark green of the bamboo leaves. Mineral blue highlights the brighter areas of the bamboo leaves as well, echoing the hues of the flower petals. The arrangement and coloring throughout the work is thus exquisite, representative of the wisdom and skill of this woman artist.(20110102)
