Liang Heng, style name Dishu, is mentioned in records as being good at landscapes and figures, but few of his works have survived. The civil service examination system for selecting officials began in the Sui dynasty and became an institution in the Ming and Qing period. This work depicts the crack of dawn, where throngs check the exam pass list by firelight. Many have gathered at the announcement board, looking for their names. Those who failed are supported as they leave dejectedly, this work exquisitely expressing the yearning for an official career and the aspirations of fame among many scholars.(20120714)
