He later studied painting from Chou Ch’en and thus became acquainted with Soochow’s artistic and literary community. His talents were recognized by Wen Cheng-ming who introduced him to the collector Hsiang Yüan-pian and Ch’en Kuan-chia of Ch’ang-chou, who became his patrons. Ch’iu Ying’s contemporaries praised his talents writing: "He saw over a thousand Sung and Yüan paintings. Exceedingly gifted, he dined on mist and drank of dew, forgoing the foods of other mortals." Ch’iu Ying is considered one of the Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty. This happy scene depicts a group of children playing in a courtyard. Whether reading, playing a musical instrument or riding a wooden horse, they each express the joyful circumstances of youth. The painting style seen in this work is quite different from Ch’iu Ying’s usual manner, and it is likely that this is a later work by a different artist.
