Of exceptional talent, he once studied under Wen Cheng-ming (1574-1559). Amidst deep clouds and pines in this painting, five deer huddle against the cold. Although this work has no seal or signature of the artist, the traditional title is “Five Deer by Ch'en Tao-fu.” Ch'en Shun's renderings of deer usually were not up to that of other subjects. In the dotting and washes of the flowers and plants here are very much in the style of Ch'en Shun. Furthermore, the forms and brushwork ;of the pines, stones, and flowers all appear more refined than those of the deer.
