By the water are residences, and, on the paths between the paddy fields, willows wave gently as peach trees are in full bloom. Two gentlemen are on a spring outing; their servants walk behind carrying boxes of food. The upper part of the work is washed in mist, lending a sense of vitality. West Lake is most beautiful in spring, especially its morning mist. The stretch from Broken Bridge to Su Embankment is lined with colorful blossoms and green willows.This painting bears no signature or seal of the artist, but has been traditionally attributed to the Southern Sung court painter Hsia Kuei. Excelling at figures and landscapes, he became as famous as his contemporary, Ma Yüan. 内容简介(英文): In this painting formerly attributed to Hsia Kuei, the artist has depicted a corner of West Lake in Hangchou. There are houses beside the water , and on the paths between the paddy fields, willows wave gently and peach trees are in full blossom. Two gentlemen in sedan chairs are going on a spring outing ; their servants walk behind them carrying boxes of food. The upper part of the picture is washed in mist, lending a feeling of vitality to the painting.Hsia Kuei, style name Yü-yü, was a native of Ch’ien-t’ang (modern Hang-chou), Chekiang. During the reign of Emperor Ning-tsung (1194-1224), Hsia Kuei served as Painter-in-Attendance in the Imperial Painting Academy. He and Ma Yüan are known together as the originators of the much admired and emulated “Ma-Hsia” style.
