In landscapes, he based his style on the works of the Sung masters Li T’ang, Liu Sung-nien, Ma Yüan, and Hsia Kuei. Chou’s mature brush was sharp, strong, and refined; his style was followed by T’ang Yin and Ch’iu Ying. In this painting are several pine trees standing on a hillside. Two figures concentrate on their game of chess in a thatched hut. A figure rides a donkey, and a boy servant carrying a lute follows behind. The entire work has been done with dark ink and the brushwork is sharp and the layers of the composition well defined, making this an exceptional work by Chou Ch’en.
