He excelled at connoisseurship and became known along with Ts'ai Hsiang, Su Shih, and Huang T'ing-chien as one of the Four Masters of the Northern Sung in calligraphy. This letter was written around the year 1091 to his friend Liu Chi-sun (933-1092), who went by the style name Ching-wen. In it, Mi Fu discusses a transaction concerning calligraphy and objects of the scholar's studio. Although the letter is quite short, it fully reveals transitions of brush movement and the calligrapher's mood. In this work mostly done in running script are also elements of cursive script, with great variety in the complexity and speed of the brush strokes. For example, the five characters in the second line from the end at the left, reading “(Mi) Fu bows and calls again” is a continuous flow of rhythmic strokes that expresses Mi Fu's free and unbridled spirit.(20061206) 内容简介(英文): Mi Fu (style name Yuan-chang; sobriquets Hai-yueh wai-shih and Hsiang-yang man-shih) was a native of Wu who lived in T'ai-yuan and Hsiang-yang before settling in Jun-chou. Mi Fu's calligraphy was sweeping and soaring, much in the style of Wang Hsien-chih (344-386). His brushwork was upright and solid, yet containing a quality of elegant flowing and beauty. Su Tung-p'o (1036-1101) once said that Mi's calligraphy was unparalled and entered the realm of the divine. Most of Mi's works were done in running grass script, which is all derived from regular grass script; it is evident in almost every dot and stroke. This is a letter written by Mi Fu to his friend Liu Chi-sun. Liu (style name Ching-wen) was demoted to magistrate of Hsi-chou in 1091 and passed away in the following year. Thus, we know that this letter was written in 1091, when Mi was 40 years of age and at the peak of his calligraphy career. The brushwork throughout is elegant and the composition handsome. This is the tenth leaf from the album Sung ssu-chia chen-chi.
